Sabang Airport

Sabang Airport Hotel

Pulau Weh’s tourist infrastructure is compact: the “town” area around central Sabang is small. Most visitors stay either in this gateway area or at beachside resorts/villages. Here is our overview of what to expect from Sabang airport hotels and beyond.

The Hawk’s Nest Resort typifies the mid-range, family-run resorts that double as dive bases and offer a relaxed seaside atmosphere.

Accommodation Around Airport And Town

  • Close to airport/town centre (gateway zone): Simple guesthouses, budget inns and a few mid-range hotels. These are practical if you’re arriving late, need a short transfer, or prefer quick access to the shops and the ferry/port area. Many are family run; expect basic rooms, modest breakfast, and easy access to minibuses/taxis. (Example: RedDoorz-style budget guesthouses that target low-cost travellers – see below.)
  • Beachside resorts and dive lodges (Gapang/Iboih/Sumur Tiga): 20–60 minutes’ drive from the ferry/central Sabang depending on where you go. Here you’ll find the island’s character: beachfront bungalows, small resorts, dive centres and homestays. Facilities range from bare-bones bungalows with shared facilities to proper resort rooms with restaurants, dive trips and boat transfer services. (Examples: Hawk’s Nest, Yulia, Panorama Seulako – see below.)
  • Higher end / boutique / private villas: Fewer and further between than on bigger Indonesian islands; when present they’re small, often run by dive operators or independent hosts rather than international chains. Expect quieter properties with strong local hospitality rather than luxury hotel polish.

What Each Class Gives You

Budget Guesthouses/Losmen

  • Closest to the airport and town.
  • Rooms: Small, clean, fan or single AC rooms, private or shared bathroom in some cases.
  • Service: Friendly, basic front-desk service; limited English at smaller places.
  • Who they suit: Overnighting on arrival/departure, solo travellers, cheap stays between dives.
  • Price ballpark: Roughly IDR 150k–350k/night (≈ USD $10–22) for simple private rooms — very approximate because rates fluctuate with season.

Comfortable Mid-Range

  • Family resorts/small hotels.
  • Rooms: Private bathrooms, AC, in-house restaurant, sometimes a pool or beach access. Many offer dive/snorkel trips, boat transfers and tours.
  • Who they suit: Couples, small groups, travellers who want comfort without luxury.
  • Price ballpark: Roughly IDR 400k–1,000k/night (≈ USD $25–65), depending on room type and whether meals/boat trips are included.

Dive Lodges/Boutique Beachfront Resorts

  • Rooms and extras: Bungalow style, direct beach access, on-site dive operators, equipment storage, boat trips to Rubiah and dive sites. Personalized service — they’ll help with dive packages and transfers.
  • Who they suit: Divers, snorkellers and anyone wanting that “island resort” feel.
  • Price ballpark: IDR 700k–1,800k+ (≈ USD $45–$120+) per night for higher-comfort beachfront bungalows or dive-resort packages (season and inclusion of dives change the amounts).

Homestays/Budget Bungalows At Iboih And Gapang

  • Very local, social; great value if you want simple beachfront living. Often cheaper in low season but can fill at weekends/holidays.

Arrival And Transfers

  • Proximity: Maimun Saleh Airport is small and located in Sabang; the island is compact so transfers to town or nearby beaches are generally short (but time varies by destination — Iboih and Gapang are further and can be 30–60 minutes from the ferry/central area depending on traffic and your driver). There is no scheduled public bus network. If you arrive by air you’ll usually get a short taxi/ojek (motorbike taxi) ride to central Sabang; if you arrive by ferry you’ll disembark at Balohan and then move on by taxi/driver.
  • Booking transfers: Many resorts (especially the mid-range/dive lodges) will help arrange collections and boat trips. If you’re staying in town, short taxi rides are the norm. Expect to be approached by drivers at arrival points — agree price before you go.

Practical Tips For Where To Stay

  • For convenience and quick turnarounds (early flights, ferry connections): stay near Sabang town/airport. Good for arrival/departure nights.
  • If your priority is diving, snorkelling or beach relaxation: choose Iboih/Gapang resorts — you’ll swap a little transfer time for direct beach and dive access.
  • Book ahead on local long weekends: the island fills on Indonesian long weekends and some weekends — small properties have limited rooms. Weekdays and low season give better last-minute availability.
  • Expect island service rhythms: things run at island pace — power/water are usually fine but luxury hotel-level extras are rare. The hospitality is overwhelmingly local and friendly.

Checklist For Booking Sabang Hotels

  • Decide: convenience (town/airport) vs experience (Iboih/Gapang beachfront).
  • Check whether the hotel offers transfers or dive trip packages if diving/snorkelling is your aim.
  • Confirm whether your booking includes breakfast or meals — many smaller resorts’ on-site restaurants are a real convenience.
  • Bring cash for small purchases and local transport; some smaller properties don’t take international cards reliably.
  • Read recent guest reviews (last 6–12 months) for up-to-date reports on service and any seasonal issues.
